Wireless Access Point & Cloud Management in the NEWS

Yesterday was a great day for Amer and PowerCloud Systems.

A press release sent,  plus an Article written about our Access Points & Cloud Management and details of the solution provided for a School District in Alabama.   One of our first install of 100 access points is up and running and has gone very well – the customer is extremely happy with how easy the install went and the performance of the access points.

Wayne Caudle, Boaz City School District IT director: “We prepare students for success in the 21st century and that requires a digital-classroom environment with great Wi-Fi connectivity as its foundation. Robust connectivity is a must-have, and Amer Network delivers a Wi-Fi solution that can manage this increasing demand.” “Amer’s cloud-based solution exceeded our operational requirements from Day One. Students and staff effortlessly connected across campuses and between buildings. Work – Pleasure Mix – Tired Eyes, Head & Neck – working on your PC

Anyone today working in an office can spend the entire day on the computer working – Sitting and staring at your screen or screens.  Many in today’s world work through lunch, coming in earlier and working late.  All this time in front of your computer can be very bad for your health, your eyes and your body.

I am sure you have heard and most likely have tried the 20 or 30 minute break, look around, stand up and move around, but how many of us really do that – not many.

Well I came across a great little program that you can get from Portable APPs – these are those applications that you can launch from a USB key so you can run these programs on your work machine, home machine – set them up and have the program follow you.  I have gone one step further and have loaded up the loader and programs on my DROPBOX account so I can get to them anywhere, anytime.  I don’t have to worry about a USB key.

You set up the times for a quick break, a coffee break and it pops up with warnings and exercises to do when your taking your short break.  I think it is GREAT!  I loaded up today and have really tried hard to follow it, I have made a few changes to the timing to make it work with my work flow and I will continue to use it at work.

Workrave is a program that assists in the recovery and prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI). The program frequently alerts you to take micro-pauses, rest breaks and restricts you to your daily limit. Please refer to the feature comparison for a complete list of features, and how the program performs with respect to other programs on the market. The program runs on GNU/Linux and Microsoft Windows.

Manage your Schedule – Adults & Students

No matter who and what you do we all have TASKS and we all have to manager our time.  Today the only way you will succeed is being able to manage your tasks and time effectively including students.  I am still trying to teach my teenager how to manage her time better when it comes to assignments, studying and exams.

An interesting post on Microsoft Office Blog – Take a read!

The author is using OneNote – I don’t have access at the office so I am using Evernote and there are several others available as well.

NOTEBOOKS – in the CLOUD – It’s more then just NOTES

I have a few times talked about Notebooks in the cloud and I have really only used the WEB application to quickly put something down so I could view and review later at home or the office.  I recently installed the desktop application for Evernote and started doing a little more research and found out just how powerful this tool really is.  If nothing else you need remember that these documents you create are FULLY SEARCHABLE – even notes that you scan or take a picture of!  Yes you can scan a document, put it in Evernote and your able to search that document.  Two other great features if you have the application or plugins working you can mark anything and add it as a note, you can also send an email to your account and it becomes a note.  Sorting is based on Notebook name and/or tags, plus search.

Evernote posted a great little article for STUDENTS – this is more for University students, but HS kids with Notebook in the classroom should be able to benefit as well.

For sure this can apply to anyone sitting at home or in an office.  With most business computers being locked down so you can’t install software, but that is OK because whatever you do at home on your desktop is SYNC‘d with the WEB and you can access the WEB version of your notes anywhere.

Post-it Notes in the CLOUD!

Several years ago I started to use Google Notebook to make notes, ToDo lists, if I find something at work that I want to review at home etc.  This product is still available, but Google is not updating.

You ask what is Post-it Notes in the Cloud – it’s a WEB application that allows you to make notes, Tag them as well as put them categories to organize the notes.  These are available to you where ever you are with access to the WEB!  Has really come in handy!

Then I got a smart phone and other applications started to show up that allowed easy access from your computer and smart phone.  I started using a program called Evernote and recently started looking at Catch as well.

We all have to make notes, hear a song you want to remember the name, need to pick something up etc… Think about it this way – EVERYTHING you use a Sticky Note for you can use one of these and many other programs that are available.  Keep your important working notes and information in the cloud so you have access to them anytime and anywhere!

Malicious Software – What are you doing about it? Security!

One of those things we say we should do and don’t…  My computer at home is only used by me, so I am confident that I will not do something silly and get infected.  My other systems in the house is another story – my wife and two daughters use this and you never know what might happen.  You need to keep yourself safe when on the WEB, if you don’t do a few basic things you just might end up getting infected and that is not fun.  Sometime you can get it removed and go on, other times you have to start from scratch which could mean losing information or just a lot of time or money to get it done.

First off everyone should have Antivirus software running and keeping it up to date.

You should also be running a Malicious Software Removal Tool regularly to ensure no one has done something they shouldn’t have….This advice was too late for my father-in-law whose system got infected bad!  All antivirus software is shut down, no internet access at all in order to download the MSRT either.  I am hoping the USB ports are not shut down as well as I am hoping to load up the MSRT from a USB key – we will have to see!

Microsoft – Malicious Software Removal Tool

The Microsoft Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool is a free malware scanner and remover which is updated every first Tuesday of each month. The tool (mrt.exe) is located in the system32 directory of Windows and it silently scans the computer after being updated via Windows Update. MRT or MSRT does not run to scan the system all the time but any PC user can manually scan the PC to check the system from Trojans, worms and other malware that MRT can identify. Note that MRT does not detect all type of threats but was developed by Microsoft to detect and remove malware that is in the wild, especially from worms that targets vulnerable components in Windows.

E-mail Management

I am sure like everyone I know, they have management issue around e-mails.  We all get too many e-mails and trying to find the time to review, reply and manage them can sometimes be impossible.  We all spend too much time, and for many our personal time trying to keep it somewhat under control.  Just a few years ago it was just work e-mail, today it’s both work and our own personal email accounts!

One of the things I have done for my personal email account is setup a 2nd email address that I only use for REGISTRATIONS, offerings etc.  Anything that you might receive regular emails.  This makes my primary email account just for family and friends – the emails I want to review.  The other account is reviewed when I have time.

Well Microsoft posted this TIP – Though it is titled for Teachers – I am sure anyone can use these idea’s in some shape or form.

How much e-mail do you get every day? I’m guessing the answer is “too much”. What with planning lessons, teaching, grading assignments, reporting to your principal and stuff, email is just another time-consuming task. How about letting your computer so do some of the work?

Here are seven Outlook tips that will save you time and help you organize your e-mail.  FULL POST

Windows Upgrade – Moving from XP to WIN7 – Steady State

Do you use Steady State tool kit?

You always have to wonder when companies have a great product or service – they do an upgrade and that service goes away.  Well Microsoft is certainly one of those companies many times over.

I see some changes happening at Microsoft, they are starting to do many things differently – one of them is listening to the users and doing something about it or trying!

If you manage system then most likely you have used Windows Steady State tool kit, well they have never created a Windows 7 version of this great tool.  When I say Microsoft listens and take actions, well I don’t think you will see Steady State for WIN7…..

A Windows 7 version of Steady State was not created and we’ve heard loud and clear from IT Pros that this is something they wanted and needed.  After we evaluated the types of functionality Steady State provides, we found that using new Windows capabilities that are built into Windows 7, Group Policies and free tools from Microsoft, the majority of Steady State functionality could actually be replicated by IT admins.

The good news is that they have addressed this concern and have put together a few papers explaining how to do almost the same thing as Steady State for XP and Vista within WIN7 – So Microsoft says…

Going back to the Windows article, the comments don’t paint a very good picture… read for yourself!

If your thinking of moving to WIN7 or already have and was wondering where STEADY STATE was, well you have your answer and some reading to do.
